Enjoying popcorn at The Strand in Rockland, Maine - Photo by Mark Fleming

In March of 2010 I was contacted by Down East Magazine, to talk about why I chose to move to Maine and live there year-round. I agreed, and this article is the result.

DownEast Magazine Article

I don’t know if you’ve ever been interviewed for a magazine article before, but it’s not quite as exciting as everyone says it is. No big lights, no throngs of assistants catering to your every whim, no flashy studio, in fact, no hype at all. Just a free cup of coffee and two hours of your life slipping by as you talk about the most boring subject in the world, yourself. And, I think I paid for the coffee.

The writer, Ed Beem, however, was a treat. He was thoughtful, seemingly interested in my prattling on and on and I think he may have even laughed at my attempt at telling a joke. Or, perhaps he laughed when I told him I moved to Maine, practically sight-unseen. Actually, that was it.

When we finished our chat, Ed thanked me for my time and we parted ways. I walked out of the North Star Cafe on Portland’s East End into a chilly, breezy March afternoon and I supposed Ed continued to enjoy his free cup of coffee while desperately attempting to craft a coherent story out of my babble.

Three months later, the article appeared.

I don’t know if you’ve ever read an article about yourself or seen a picture of yourself in a magazine. First, you can’t believe you said the things that the magazine says you did. It sounds like someone else speaking – someone who has a few things in common with you, but is even more two-dimensional and less interesting. Second, the picture staring back at you looks more like a distant cousin than yourself. Go figure.

On second thought, perhaps you shouldn’t read it.

Type A

Yes, it’s considered a personality type, however, this incarnation is a music video for a  song titled, you guessed it, Type A. Though, as luck would have it, the song is about a bloke with the afore-mentioned personality classification.

A few years ago my long-time creative partner, Doug Stradley and I were sitting in a small, dimly lit and slightly disheveled office in what is now the Maine Media Workshops. We were both working there at the time – Doug heading the film program and I heading the film technology department (very geeky, yes). It was early spring and we had a slow week ahead of us. Obviously this meant we needed to do something epic. Or at least fun and creative. We needed to shoot a music video.

Doug, being the well-connected, resourceful guy he is, decided to call a pal at Saddle Creek and find out if any of the bands needed a music video shot – one that we could shoot in Maine and didn’t need to feature the band. Tall order, but as luck would have it, the pal was intrigued. He gave us a choice of three songs, three different bands. We chose this one.

It was a fun three day shoot. We had a great crew that included long-time friend and gripologist, Adam Belanger (Abel), the very talented Laura Sabatie and the ever resourceful Andre Danylevich to name a few. Our friend and actor Jim James agreed to star as Mr. Type A – perhaps cast against type. And good friend and filmmaker, Ryan White jumped on board as one of the three “handlers.”

And we made this.

This past August, amidst the massive oaks and lush green fields of a turn of the century estate on Long Island – now part of the Cold Spring Harbor Labs – I spent a week filming with PopTech. We were out east on Long Island to document the organization’s Science Fellows retreat, to work and play with the some of the best and brightest young scientists in the US. This is the short film that came from that effort.

This past summer I filmed my first feature, PerfectMatch (originally titled Her Name Is … Me). It’s a quirky romantic comedy about two twenty-somethings who find each other and fall in love over the internet. It seems cute and quaint, right? Except that the boy, Stephen, actually works for the dating site they met on. Does the girl, Maggie, mind this? Possibly, if she knew about it.

It was a fun shoot (more to come on that) full of wacky antics and tomfoolery in the little town of Marietta, Ohio. And, I thought it was a wrap. Apparently it’s not quite. We’re now heading down to Houston, Texas in March to film a few reshoots over the course of four days. Wacky, indeed. But also fun, and probably the best thing for a film that has a lot of potential to be great.

In order to pay for the reshoots, the production company is raising the money (a modest amount) via Kickstarter.com. It’s an interesting and fun concept and one that I hope works out. If you’d like to know more, visit the PerfectMatch kickstarter page.

You can also learn more about the film on the General Films facebook page.

The new year has begun with aplomb, or at least with a small pile of snow and a modicum of good cheer here in New England. This, of course, means it’s time to organize my workshop schedule for the Spring and Summer.  I am excited about returning to Maine Media Workshops once again to teach about my favorite subject, light.

The courses I lead are concept-based, geared towards building a strong understanding of how to effectively manipulate the quality and quantity of light and shadow in order to convey meaning. The concepts are strongly reinforced with a lot of hands-on lighting in both very controlled (sound stage) and less-so (practical locations) environments.

These courses also serve as a guilty pleasure; they help to recharge me creatively and they provide a learning environment in which I find myself discovering new qualities of light and the process of lighting as well.

Basic Lighting and Grip
May 22 – May 28

Location Lighting
July 3 – July 9

Basic Lighting and Grip
